It’s Never Too Late to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Hurrican ErnestoWhile it turns out the Hurricane Ernesto will not have an impact on the Sarasota area (other than possibly some waves in the Gulf), both Ernesto and Tropical Storm Debbie earlier this summer are good reminders that it’s never too late to prepare for hurricane season…even here in Sarasota. According to experts the tropical storm season which typically lasts through November 30 is pretty tame this year. But still 12 named storms have been predicted and 7 have the potential to form into hurricanes.

If you have not done so yet, it is recommended you and your family put together a Home Emergency Supply kit. You can use a big Tupperware bin or some other form of waterproof case. Items to include but not limited to are listed below.

  • WATER: It is recommended that you pack one gallon per person per day for at least three days for drinking including sanitation.
  • FOOD:  Due to a possible power outage you will need non-perishable items to last up to at least three days. Do not forget a manual can opener!
  • Several flash lights. (FYI- glow sticks work great to ease the kid’s fears.)
  • Battery operated radio (do not forget the extra batteries).
  • First aid kit
  • Pliers or wrench in case you need to shut off utilities
  • Wet wipes and garbage bags
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Local maps
  • Whistle or loud noise maker: This is in case you need to signal for help.

In addition, be sure to always stay informed and have a plan.
