Labor Day was originally organized back in 1882 to celebrate the American workforce and the contributions it has made to the United States economy. Over the years many people mark Labor Day as the end of the summer season and a great excuse to travel or play outdoors. The Manatee, Sarasota and surrounding areas have plenty to offer this upcoming Labor Day weekend. Here are a few highlights:
Downtown Venice Craft Festival – On Sept 1st and 2nd, walk down Miami Avenue and meet some of the nation’s finest artists while appreciating or even purchasing their displayed work at the 4th annual downtown Venice Labor Day Weekend Craft Festival. It’s starts at 10am and ends at 5pm. Admission is free. Come see a variety of crafts that will amaze you- stained glass, handmade jewelry, paintings, photography, personalized products for your kids and even your pets, and much more. Come with an appetite too. Freshly made kettle corn will be available.
Marauders – Two final home games will be held on Labor Day weekend: Saturday and Sunday at McKechnie Field. On Saturday experience Tobacco Free Florida when the Marauders will go tobacco-free inside the park and educate kids on the dangers of tobacco use. Afterwards stick around for fireworks presented by Gold Coast Eagle Distributing immediately following the 6:30pm game. Or come early to Sunday’s game (10am) and plan on baseball-breakfast combo special with $1 tickets and $5.00 for all you can eat pancakes and sausage breakfast!
56th Annual Englewood Pioneer Days Parade ─This year’s theme: “Hats Off To Englewood!” The parade will be held on Monday, September 3, starting at 9 am. You can catch the parade at Old Englewood Road through to Deerborn Street. Pioneer Day offers more than just a parade. Englewood’s entire weekend will be filled will all kinds of activities during their Pioneer Day Festival such as the usual Cardboard Boat Race, Little Ms/Mr Englewood, Englewood Idol, and the Diaper Derby. The Michael O’Donnell Memorial Fishing Derby will be held that weekend as well. Englewood is approximately one hour north of the Sarasota/Manatee area.
Traditional Canes Cross Country Classic – For those who feel like moving on Labor Day rather than opting for resting on your day off, sign up for the 20th Annual Canes Cross Country Classic 5K & 1 Mile Fun run taking place on Labor Day, Monday, September 3 at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton. The 5K starts at 8:00 a.m., and the 1-mile at 9:00 a.m. This classic is open to all ages and abilities with awards and door prizes. This event is supported by Bradenton Runner’s Club and Road Runners Club of America.
