Labor Day Weekend in the Sarasota Area

Labor Day in SarasotaWhat to do Labor Day Weekend in Sarasota?

Labor Day was originally organized back in 1882 to celebrate the American workforce and the contributions it has made to the United States economy. Over the years many people mark Labor Day as the end of the summer season and a great excuse to travel or play outdoors. The Manatee, Sarasota and surrounding areas have plenty to offer this upcoming Labor Day weekend. Here are a few highlights:

Downtown Venice Craft Festival – On Sept 1st and 2nd, walk down Miami Avenue and meet some of the nation’s finest artists while appreciating or even purchasing their displayed work at the 4th annual downtown Venice Labor Day Weekend Craft Festival. It’s starts at 10am and ends at 5pm. Admission is free. Come see a variety of crafts that will amaze you- stained glass, handmade jewelry, paintings, photography, personalized products for your kids and even your pets, and much more. Come with an appetite too. Freshly made kettle corn will be available.

Marauders – Two final home games will be held on Labor Day weekend: Saturday and Sunday at McKechnie Field. On Saturday experience Tobacco Free Florida when the Marauders will go tobacco-free inside the park and educate kids on the dangers of tobacco use. Afterwards stick around for fireworks presented by Gold Coast Eagle Distributing immediately following the 6:30pm game. Or come early to Sunday’s game (10am) and plan on baseball-breakfast combo special with $1 tickets and $5.00 for all you can eat pancakes and sausage breakfast!

56th Annual Englewood Pioneer Days Parade This year’s theme: “Hats Off To Englewood!”  The parade will be held on Monday, September 3, starting at 9 am. You can catch the parade at Old Englewood Road through to  Deerborn Street. Pioneer Day offers more than just a parade. Englewood’s entire weekend will be filled will all kinds of activities during their Pioneer Day Festival such as the usual Cardboard Boat Race, Little Ms/Mr Englewood, Englewood Idol, and the Diaper Derby. The Michael O’Donnell Memorial Fishing Derby will be held that weekend as well. Englewood is approximately one hour north of the Sarasota/Manatee area.

Traditional Canes Cross Country Classic – For those who feel like moving on Labor Day rather than opting for resting on your day off, sign up for the 20th Annual Canes Cross Country Classic 5K & 1 Mile Fun run taking place on Labor Day, Monday, September 3 at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton. The 5K starts at 8:00 a.m., and the 1-mile at 9:00 a.m. This classic is open to all ages and abilities with awards and door prizes. It’s Never Too Late to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Hurrican ErnestoWhile it turns out the Hurricane Ernesto will not have an impact on the Sarasota area (other than possibly some waves in the Gulf), both Ernesto and Tropical Storm Debbie earlier this summer are good reminders that it’s never too late to prepare for hurricane season…even here in Sarasota. According to experts the tropical storm season which typically lasts through November 30 is pretty tame this year. But still 12 named storms have been predicted and 7 have the potential to form into hurricanes.

If you have not done so yet, it is recommended you and your family put together a Home Emergency Supply kit. You can use a big Tupperware bin or some other form of waterproof case. Items to include but not limited to are listed below.

  • WATER: It is recommended that you pack one gallon per person per day for at least three days for drinking including sanitation.
  • FOOD:  Due to a possible power outage you will need non-perishable items to last up to at least three days. Do not forget a manual can opener!
  • Several flash lights. (FYI- glow sticks work great to ease the kid’s fears.)
  • Battery operated radio (do not forget the extra batteries).
  • First aid kit
  • Pliers or wrench in case you need to shut off utilities
  • Wet wipes and garbage bags
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Local maps
  • Whistle or loud noise maker: This is in case you need to signal for help.

In addition, be sure to always stay informed and have a plan.

Back to School Tax-Free Holiday

florida tax free shoppingIt’s that time of year again! Shopping for back to school supplies and clothing can be stressful. However this year the 2012 Florida Legislature passed and the Governor approved a tax-free period that states:

“No sales tax shall be collected on the sale of clothing, wallets, or bags, including handbags, backpacks, fanny packs, and diaper bags, but excluding briefcases, suitcases, and other garment bags, having a sales price of $75 or less per item, or on sales of certain school supplies having a sales price of $15 or less per item for the period beginning 12:01 a.m. on August 3, 2012, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on August 5, 2012.”

Here is a quick guideline to help you understand what the tax free holiday covers:

Any article of clothing that is wearing apparel: Not to exceed $75.00 per item

  • all footwear (except skis, swim fins, roller blades, and skates),
  • Items intended to be worn on or about the human body.
  • NOTE: does not include watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, or sporting equipment.

School supplies: Not to exceed $15.00 per item

  • pens,
  • pencils,
  • erasers,
  • crayons,
  • notebooks,
  • notebook filler paper,
  • legal pads, binders,
  • lunch boxes,
  • construction paper,
  • markers,
  • folders,
  • poster board,
  • composition books,
  • poster paper,
  • scissors,
  • cellophane tape,
  • glue,
  • paste,
  • rulers,
  • computer disks,
  • protractors,
  • compasses,
  • calculators.

Misc.: Not to exceed $75.00 per item

  • wallets,
  • handbags, backpacks, fanny packs, and diaper bags, but excluding briefcases, suitcases, and other garment bags

Of course just like any holiday expect long lines but well worth the savings and time!

Oscar Scherer State Park

Oscar Scherer State ParkOne of the great things about living in Sarasota is all the wonderful parks. The Oscar Scherer State Park offers a beautiful quiet setting to relax or find adventure. Hike one of the 15 miles of trails, go bicycling, enjoy wildlife viewing, take a leisurely paddle down South Creek or cool off with a swim in Lake Osprey.

For your convenience, canoe and kayak rentals are available. Freshwater and saltwater fishing is also available along the creek. Anglers can fish along the shores of Lake Osprey, which is also the park’s swimming destination. Picnic areas along South Creek are equipped with grills; pavilions can be reserved for a fee. The park has full-facility campsites and a youth/group campground. The Oscar Scherer State Park nature center has exhibits and videos about the park’s natural communities.Oscar Scherer State Park

Also, this large acreage of scrubby flatwoods makes this park one of the best places to see Florida scrub-jays, a threatened species found only in Florida. But be prepared to see Gators, snakes and other fun Floridian wildlife as well.
